Wild Ideas: Creativity from the Inside Out
Author: Cathy Wild
I previously reviewed Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert when I thought it had alleviated any fear, doubt or insecurity I carry in creating and bringing my ideas to life. Nearly a year later, I realize that “getting out of your own way” is so much more difficult than it sounds.
I have brought life to very few ideas, none of real significance to me, since reading Big Magic. In fact, the last year has been a real struggle to find much inspiration at all. I have all but abandoned this blog due to feeling bogged down by my own mind. I am overthinking and as a result completing very little.
I had a conversation with a friend recently. I mentioned I was struggling creatively. The next day she happened on this book, Wild Ideas: Creativity from the Inside Out by Cathy Wild, and felt compelled to buy it for me. Another book about creativity? Yes. Why not? Read every book that is given to you, that you happen across or speaks to you. You never know when THAT book will come along.
While the message of this book is universal, it spoke to my heart. The message is so much deeper than just being creative. It reaches in and gently touches the tender parts of you that you’ve protected for far too long. What have you missed out on in life as a result of these protections without even knowing it?
The message this book offered felt so personal. It felt as if she knew me better than I know myself. She understood my wounds and how they've affected me all these years later. She gently provides guidance on seeing and moving through all your baggage and being what you need in order to create…whatever it may be that you need to create. I have always felt out of place in this world, not feeling as if I belong anywhere. I felt as if Cathy understood this about me and still wanted to help.
I was so touched, deep in my soul, by Cathy’s words that I needed to let her know. I searched her website for an email but only found a phone number. I tend to rely on email, maybe because it provides some distance that makes me comfortable. With a knot in my stomach, I dialed her number anyway. I was relieved when I was sent to voicemail. I left a message telling her what her book had given to me and I hung up. A few minutes later my phone rang. Cathy and I, complete strangers, yet somehow so familiar, chatted for nearly 45 minutes. What a gift!
Today, I feel a little less lonely in this world. There is someone out there that struggles just like me. She gave me tools to be more comfortable with myself and that might be just what I needed. Whether or not I create anything, I feel lighter now knowing somebody ‘gets’ me for once in my life.
Thank you Cathy!

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
While reading the most recent issue of Taproot magazine, I turned the page to find a quote from Big Magic. This quote intrigued me so I ordered the book. I believe the Universe will provide what you need but it is up to you to be open to receive. I definitely needed this book and I needed it exactly now.
We all have those big ideas…dreams…inspiration…right? We dream of creating something, writing a book or blog, painting, building a homestead…fill in the blank. Whether you’ve taken a single step toward your inspiration or not, this book will provide what is needed to begin and to persevere.

Elizabeth Gilbert gives you every reason to get out of your own way and create. “Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”
I never considered myself a writer to any degree but I do love a good conversation. This blog was born over a year before I had the courage to publish it. And, while now published, was filled with doubt and insecurity. After this book, I am viewing this blog as a conversation with friends. I have new perspective of every creative idea I’ve ever had.
This book has brought to light the joy in my creative ideas and laid to rest any fear, doubt or insecurity. “The work wants to be made, and it wants to be made through you.”
It doesn’t have to be perfect to give it life. I will bring life to every idea that I can and then move on to the next idea. I will “[collaborate] to the best of my ability with forces of inspiration that I can neither see, nor prove, nor command, nor understand.”
And, I hope you will too.

From their site:
"Taproot is an add-free, independent print publication celebrating food, farm, family and craft. [Their] mission is to build and support the vibrant community of people participating in both the practical and fine arts, to craft handmade lives, by producing quality, unique, beautiful, positive and heartfelt print media and an online marketplace selling a curated selection of prints, craft kits and handmade goods."
I just received my first subscription issue (issue 37) as well as a back issue and a book I purchased from their shop. Each issued is organized in Head, Hands and Heart. This magazine is printed on substantial paper, filled with beautiful artwork and photography. The stories I have read are well-written, engaging, informative, heartfelt and sometimes poetic. The contributors are diverse and interesting. The projects and recipes are detailed and unique and you can share on Instagram with #taprootmakealong.
This is a magazine you will want to collect, read and reread. I have never seen a periodical that is better than many books in its content, quality and beauty. The subscription price is MORE than worth it.
